The Devil's Toenail Empty The Devil's Toenail

Leander went to the first place he thought he wouldn't run into Dyten, which was the library, not because he thought Dyten lacked in that department, but rather he felt Dyten doesn't appreciate the enforced silence and confinement of the the place.

Leander didn't know what to think. He was notorious, yet regarded as the demon of seduction and lust, with an endless list of conquests in his bag, and the object of scorn and jealousy of many others. He was a bastardized epicurean, a sexual deviant, a pedophile, a sado-masochist, and a rapist.

But now all of that has been blown out of the picture, because the heart he didn't know was there would not stop beating for a person he had just met.

He was content with rejecting the things he felt with full conviction, crushing it within himself into fine, indiscernible powder.

The Devil's Toenail Empty Re: The Devil's Toenail

Post by Lauren Saharah Sat May 28, 2011 4:43 pm

Lauren made her way to the library, she had been working with Malina lately on her ability to manipulate the weather and knew that she needed to look up quite a bit of information if she wanted to do it right. She was already having trouble with the girl, since every time Malina attempted to do something to the weather, it made things worse. So she needed a breather and some time to herself. Which was why she had came up with the excuse of the library in the first place and had told Malina to focus on her telekinesis.

It was days like this that the quiet comfort of the library just made all her problems go away. Which was surprising since she tended to enjoy being around nature, it relaxed her and strengthened her powers. She pushed open the door with a sigh and looked around for a place to sit, hopefully away from any large crowds.

She found a nice spot off to the right and walked over, unconsciously shifting the chair out into her awaiting hand before taking a seat. Lauren groaned as she realized what she did, taking a look around to see if anyone had noticed. She sighed in relief, when she noticed the closest person to her was looking the other way. Lauren took a moment to study his profile, he seemed off, like there was something bothering him. An she debated whether or not to go an talk to him. She hated to see people so down in the dumps and looking so lonely. She looked around hesitantly before walking over to him, "Hi there. I'm Lauren."

The Devil's Toenail Empty Re: The Devil's Toenail

Leander's hand closed around the book.

On the cover was the title, "The Devil's Toenail". It was one of his favorites, and it always seemed to silently console him whenever he read its pages.

It was about a normal boy who found the Devil's Toenail by a beach, and starts hearing the voice of temptation in his head. The boy, Stevie, hindered by a secret he doesn't divulge to the reader at the beginning of the story, has second thoughts following through with what the boys at his high school want him to do, which was to set fire to a wastebin in the library, so that they would deem him worthy of their attention.

Leander sighed, staring at a similar wastebin across the table he had occupied, willing it to explode.

Stevie's inner conflict was the same as his own, in one way or the other. It was ironic, how he had his own devils to confront.

But his was much more ridiculous and stupid. Stevie's secret was that he was victim of a tragic fire. He was marred with horrible scars on his face, and scarred with the trauma it brought. The mere lighting of a match terrified him. What more a dustbin full of paper? It hurt him that to regain his sense of normalcy, he had to face what made him abnormal.

Leander clutched the book to his chest when a girl walked over to her.

"Hi there, I'm Lauren," she said.

Leander looked at her behind his lashes, still troubled by his confusing thoughts of Dyten, of Stevie's struggles, and of the war.

"Hello ..." Leander merely replied, his hand subconsciously stroking the book's binding.

The Devil's Toenail Empty Re: The Devil's Toenail

Lauren watched as emotions flashed across the man's face and she fought the urge to dive into his mind, searching for what had him so thoughtful. However without good reason it was against her moral code. She would use her powers when necessary, but never to do something as unimportant as killing her over active curiosity. The woman sighed, sick of reading up on the various powers that people would come to her with. It became tiring after a few hours.

"So, erm, what was your name?" It was a little strange of her to approach this random stranger, so she now realized. But of course everything even mildly intelligent thought that danced through her mind did so just too late. It was normal for her to make others feel uncomfortable, though she was a very calm person. Perhaps it was that she did not understand the concept of personal space or that she was bright even when others were not so cheerful. "What are you reading?"

Leander looked towards the wastebin again. "Leander. It's the Devil's Toenail."

He finally glanced at her and took in her appearance. He didn't know what make of her, except for that she's pretty and quite bored that she'd be talking to him.
